No one on this world will ever be able to survive without food. If disaster strikes out of the blue, you wouldn’t want to be stuck inside your home or any place for that matter without your own food supply. So, what are the top foods perfect to stockpile during your prepping that you can easily find in the local stores?

  • Dried Beans

Black beans, kidney beans, lima beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans and others all have high calorie content, with a fair protein amount for every serving and some essential minerals and vitamins. You can get these dried beans in packages bigger than the canned beans although they tend to weigh less. A big supply of beans is very inexpensive that will make it perfect when you have to feed other mouths during a disaster. You can also carry it easily in your backpack which is better compared to having canned foods that you might better leave behind.

  • Bulk Nuts

Search for the section of bulk nuts or seeds in your local grocery store, particularly for un-shelled and unsalted ones. You might want to look for survival foods that are not high in salt since too much salt can only make you thirsty, not to mention that this is not good for your health. Sunflower seeds, peanuts, almonds and other seeds or nuts usually sold in the bulk foods sections in supermarkets are very high in essential minerals and vitamins, essential fatty acids and a fair protein amount. These are also very lightweight and you can get many servings out of one large bag.

With high content of protein and calories and essential minerals and vitamins, brown rice is a dry and non-perishable food with long shelf life. Add hot water and allow it to soak for one to two days or until the rice completely expands. Eat your rice after it has expanded or boil it for 30 minutes to one hour for the fastest edibility.

This is pack with essential fatty acids and protein and many essential minerals and vitamins including iron and copper. To achieve the best health, go for the most natural brands. Even a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter every day can help you survive a period of limited intake of food.

You can now find energy bars for all tastes. Search for brands with high calorie count and lots of protein and many nutrients. Chocolate is also great quick energy source and a morale booster at the same time while still giving you a generous amount of calories.

  • Trail Mix

One of the top favorite foods among hikers, trail mix has extensive array of ingredients such as peanuts and other nuts, raisins and sometimes, even chocolate piece and berries and dried fruits. Simple sugars found in dried fruits, raisins and chocolate are quick mood boosters and great sources of short-term energy. It is also the perfect way to include some dried fruits to your diet plan for survival.

  • Instant Coffee/Coffee

Did you ever try to quit your coffee drinking habit after several years of relying on it to wake you up in the morning and make it through the day? If you are not a coffee drinker, someone in your family might consider coffee as a true essential who might also feel lethargic, tired of suffer from headaches without it. Coffee is not really a top priority but if you can consider it for your prepping, someone will surely thank you for it. It is also great for morale and an effective mood booster.
